The Magic of September – The month of beginnings.

It’s the beginning of the end of the year……

and September, I believe, is the most magical month, hands down. It slides onto the scene with a quietly confident gait. With shoulders back, chest thrust forward and a feline catwalk strut, September nudges us out of our summer holiday slump and cheerleads us into straightening up, going forth and knocking whatever we do, out of the park. The magic of September is defined by the plethora of multi- coloured  leaves.  It’s a month which often rewards us with an Indian summer. This gives us a magical combination of  warmth and sunshine intermingling with an ever present gentle and refresh autumn breeze.

Beginning of me

For me, it’s the month of beginnings, literally. September is the month of my birth and therefore it will always signify a new year, even more so in many ways, than January. It’s the month when I evaluate the past year and set goals for the year ahead. It is a month when I’m more in my head than any other time.  Analysing where I am in my life and in which direction I want to proceed.  I’m not only celebrating my birthday this month, but also any achievements I’ve clocked up throughout the year. By the same token, it’s a month (like January) when I’m most likely to bemoan any mistakes and resolve never to make them again.

Beginning of Autumn

With the advent of Autumn comes a particular smell which can only be  associated with a renewal of sorts. September is the smell of earth opening up to consume the damp decaying soil enriching leaves. It’s nature hunkering down before winter sets in. There’s a freshness in the air  which clears the mind and inspires long walks through parks and amongst trees, crisp leaves crunching underfoot. One of my greatest pastimes during month is collecting  smooth and shiny conkers and, discovering spectacular spider’s webs.

Beginning of the school year.

Even if you don’t have children of school age, from past experience, we’re all well aware of the start of the school year. We all know the drill because, like Christmas, the back-to-school timetable has been  forever engrained in our consciousness.  Any attempt to erase it is reliably scuppered by the countless TV ads pushing parents to shop in preparation.

Beginnings of ideas.

September, for me, is definitely a time for reflection and renewed projection of things to achieve. Back in the day, as a school girl, the start of each term saw me resolving  to try  that much harder than the term before. The new school year would always start with good intentions.  These habits die hard, which means at this time of year, I’m forever inspired to think thoughts of self-improvement and carry a check-list of to-do,to keep me on the right track.

A month of ‘re’ason

September is a month of reset and refresh. I feel rejuvenated (often after a much needed holiday in the sun), ready and rearing to return to everyday normal life. It’s at this time (alongside the New Year) where my hopes and dreams are revisited and reconsidered. I’m reminded that living my best life is what I should always be aiming for. Because September should never be a month of regret.
